USA VOTES 2016

The latest news & results from the 2016 US election campaign

October 30, 2016 By Megan Edey 2 Comments

A Fashionable Affair

The lead up to this election has been chaotic to say the least and it’s already quite clear that it’ll be unlike any before. We have our first female presidential candidate, more banter and brutal comments than ever before and for the first time, Vogue is endorsing a US Presidential Candidate (No points for guessing which one).

The campaigns have been unpredictable, full of scandal and shocking statements and with this in mind, it’s clear Vogue’s thinking was that some break-through action was needed – no, we’re not talking about a Donald Trump make-over.

Although in the past Vogue editors in chief have made their political views clear, including in the lead up to the 2012 Presidential Election, whereby Anna Wintour hosted several fundraising events in support of the Obama Campaign, including the ‘Runway to Win’ initiative when she recruited prominent designers to create pieces to support the campaign, ‘Vogue has no [official] history of political endorsement’ – Until now.

‘Vogue endorses Hillary Clinton for President of the United States’

It’s quite clear that for many, the candidates are marmite – you either love them or hate them. And for Vogue, they want Clinton on toast. So what does this mean for the election? With the majority of democratic voters being women and with the audience of Vogue in mind, it’s not surprising they have made this move.

With the huge following Vogue has in the US and endorsement posts on all their social media channels, they are rallying their feminist fashionistas and raising the support for Clinton, one fashion follower at a time. Hillary Clinton is just about leading the polls for now, but we’ll have to see what happens on the 8th November.
