The Battle for the Senate Intensifies

As the race for the white house heats up, there is also the matter of 34 senate seats to be decided. Stubbornness is what Obama had to deal with as a Republican dominated legislature in his final years as US president. A republican success in the senate is likely to give Hillary a dilemma in being able to push through policy from the off.

A comfortable victory for Clinton may give her a slight bonus in how she would be able to argue to the legislature that her mandate is largely popular. However, the modern day Republican party may sway to not be too concerned about these trends.

The Role of a Senator

The role of the senator is of great significance to the legislature, with terms lasting six years. The senate play a significant role in the checks and balances of the US political system. these are seen through international treaties, as they are ratified by the senate. Republican control would give Clinton potential issues with the GOP throughout a whole presidential term.

What It Could Mean For Trump

Trump’s potential relations with the legislature are unpredictable. Many institutional republicans have an unfavourable view on the unlikely candidate. Marco Rubio, a senator and rival of Trump for the republican nomination made has had strong opinions on Trump throughout the campaign. The feelings were generally of disdain.

How It Stands

Several results have come in already for the senate. These have seen Marco Rubio reclaim his seat in Florida, and an overall projection for a continued Republican controlled chamber. The remaining seats are generally in Republican strongholds. Whether Hillary Clinton wins tonight or not, she may be facing great difficulties in the coming years.
