USA VOTES 2016

The latest news & results from the 2016 US election campaign

Swing state: Colorado: Who will take this key battleground state?

Colorado is considered a key battleground state in the US election. Landlocked as one of the central mainland US states, Colorado’s chambers are two of 20 ‘battleground chambers,’ whereby the party out of power has the best chance to topple the opposition from its majority control. Unlike the government trifecta states, Colorado is one of 20 states under divided government, and so the outcome of its partisans can swing either way.

President Obama won Colorado in the last two presidential elections. However one of Colorado’s chambers – Colorado State Senate – is currently under Republican control. With only a 2.9% margin of control, the Democrats need only win one seat to take over and thus have full control of both chambers.

The major issues in Colorado that will each play a key role in the election is funding for education, marijuana legislation, and fracking. The latter in particular has been contested fiercely in this key state, with a pair of fracking bans being recently overturned by the state’s Supreme Court earlier this year.

According to FiveThirtyEight, Clinton currently has a 77.5% chance of winning Colorado’s nine electoral votes, having taken a stark lead against Trump in the past month.
