With Donald Trump openly sharing his controversial opinions and general ignorance towards women’s rights, racial discrimination and poverty within America, it’s hard to understand why any American would want him to lead their country. However, it is clear from the last national poll results that many people view him as a stronger candidate than Hillary Clinton. But why would a liberal citizen vote for Donald Trump?
“She has experience, but it’s bad experience and this country can’t afford to have another four years of that experience.”
Many Americans have felt let down by the government, and have become used to accepting partial truths from politicians. Too many of the past president’s policies have not been achieved by the time they leave the White House such as Obama’s promise to raise the minimum wage above $7.25. Trump, a businessman, is viewed as someone who can fix the current political system.
Trump’s supporters would argue his lack of political experience is not a disadvantage but sets him aside from a government they feel betrayed by. He appears to have some of the traits that are essential for the role of a president. Donald Trump has proved to have leadership skills through running an organisation worth billions of dollars; his career has also been built upon negotiations and has managed to maintain relations within a great network. These skills will be a useful when negotiating trade deals with other countries.
“We are going to make America wealthy again.”
Citizens want to trust that their president can make the right financial decisions. Donald Trump certainly doesn’t shy away from publicity announcing how much money he is worth, and this seems to have worked. Although he has taken business bankruptcy six times, he claims this was a tactical decision and prevented him from losing money.
He promises to reduce taxes for businesses from 35% to 15% meaning more will come and expand, creating more jobs and reducing the imbalance of distribution of wealth amongst Americas citizens. Trump also proposes the idea of taxing products sold to America by other countries to prevent their own products being devalued.
Trump’s supporters seem to view the potential for political change as great and believe voting for him is a risk they are willing to take in order to gain financial security with a president they can trust to ‘Make America Great Again’.
